About the Role

Bridge the gap between analytical planning and creative design to help communities tell their stories. This unique hybrid role combines data-driven planning insights with compelling visual storytelling to create meaningful community engagement experiences. You'll work on projects that range from community visioning processes to place branding initiatives, always with an eye toward amplifying community voices and fostering civic pride.

Key Responsibilities

Planning & Analysis: Collect and analyze data to inform planning decisions and community engagement strategies. Participate in community outreach activities and facilitate stakeholder input sessions to ensure diverse voices are heard and celebrated.

Design & Visual Storytelling: Create visually compelling designs that translate complex planning concepts into accessible, engaging communications. Develop brand systems, community engagement materials, infographics, and presentations that humanize data and amplify community narratives.

Community Engagement: Organize and lead community outreach activities, creating materials and experiences that thoughtfully engage diverse audiences. Design for both print and digital platforms to meet communities where they are.

Project Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, clients, and community stakeholders to develop deliverables that are both analytically sound and visually memorable. Support proposal development and client presentations.

Innovation: Explore creative approaches to community engagement and place-based storytelling, supporting our mission to empower communities through transformative work.

What We're Looking For

Experience: 5-7 years of relevant planning, design, and communications experience across industries, with demonstrated breadth in your portfolio.

Expertise: Strong graphic design portfolio showcasing your ability to communicate complex concepts visually. Fluency in Adobe Creative Suite, plus planning and data analysis tools. Experience with community engagement processes and designing for diverse audiences.

Collaboration: A team player who thrives in a small, collaborative environment and is passionate about community-driven solutions.

Communication: Exceptional verbal and visual communication skills, with experience facilitating workshops or presenting to diverse audiences. Spanish and other language skills are valued but not required. 

Values-Aligned: Passionate about design and planning as tools for community empowerment. You are a steward of spaces and places, committed to creating thoughtful, impactful work that celebrates and amplifies community voices.

Our Work Environment

Hybrid Model: Work remotely most of the time, with in-person team meetings once a week to foster collaboration and connection. Engagement may include some evening hearings/meetings and weekend events.

About the Role

Join our team as an entry-level planner and help us engage with Chicago's diverse communities in meaningful ways. This role is perfect for someone early in their planning career who is passionate about community-driven solutions and wants hands-on experience with real projects that make a difference.

Most importantly, this role requires native Spanish fluency to effectively engage with and serve Spanish-speaking communities across Chicago. While we know there is a lot of young talent out there, we will not consider candidates who are not native Spanish speakers.

Key Responsibilities

Community Engagement: Organize and participate in community outreach activities, with particular focus on Spanish-speaking communities. Help facilitate meetings and engagement sessions in both English and Spanish.

Research & Analysis: Collect and analyze data to inform planning decisions. Conduct research on community needs, demographics, and planning best practices.

Project Support: Assist in developing planning documents, presentations, and reports. Contribute to proposals and other communication materials that help us win meaningful work.

Collaboration: Work closely with senior planners, project managers, and community stakeholders to ensure deliverables are people-centric and culturally responsive.

Administrative Support: Help coordinate project logistics, manage deadlines, and support the planning team with various tasks as projects evolve.

What We're Looking For

Language: Native Spanish speaker with excellent English communication skills - this is essential for the role.

Experience: Recent graduate or early career professional (0-2 years of experience). Planning, communications, or related coursework preferred but not required.

Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication abilities. Analytical thinking with attention to detail. Ability to manage multiple tasks while learning in a fast-paced environment.

Values-Aligned: Genuine passion for community-driven planning solutions and working with diverse populations. Interest in social equity and inclusive engagement practices.

Location: Must be based in Chicago and available for in-person work and community engagement activities.
